Release notes for 18-January-2020
Happy New Year! I hope your 2020 is off to a great start. This is a quick update summarizing some system updates that were released to the CoachApp this past weekend.
New Feature - Athlete Checkpoint Topics
What are “Checkpoint Topics” ?
Athlete Checkpoint Topics are a mechanism to enhance the Athlete Weekly Review form. They are athlete specific questions, issues, or discussion points you’d like to get athlete feedback on for a designated period of time.
Key Points:
- Checkpoint Topics can be managed on the Athlete Profile Screen.
- Checkpoint Topics are time bound. They must have a Start and End Date.
- Only “Active” Checkpoint Topics are included in a given athlete weekly form. That is, the week being reviewed by the athlete falls between the start date and end date of a checkpoint topic.
- They are “free form” questions and responses.
Video Walkthrough:
I am neither a coach, nor nutritionist. Don’t judge the substance of my example questions or responses, I was merely trying to get something somewhat relatable into the system.
Hint: Watch the video in full screen mode to be able to actually read the text.
Enhancements, Tweaks, and Bugfixes
-
CoachApp / System wide - Sleep Quality data missing from CoachApp
Summary:
File this one under massive brain cramp. Sleep Quality has been part of the athlete weekly review form since its initial launch. However, that data field was ignored by the CoachApp data processing and display code. This has been corrected. Sleep Quality data is now visible everywhere Athlete Weekly data is displayed: Inbox, (Single) Athlete Weekly View page, as well as the plotted in the Analysis sections of the Coach App. All historical data has been loaded into the system.
-
Athlete Weeklies Inbox - auto show / hide fields
Summary:
The goal is to make using the Weeklies Inbox a little bit easier, smoother, or more effective. Displaying low-value fields, only takes up valuable screen space, and and puts a micro-decision on the coach, “Do I read this field or skip this field ?”.
For specific fields, the system will now only show those fields when there is actual data to present the coach. The fields will be hidden when there is no data to display.
The fields impacted:
- Injury / Illness related fields
- Athlete Checkpoint Topics related fields
The theory is that if the athlete did not report an injury or illness, there is very little value in displaying empty fields related to a nonexistent injury or illness. For checkpoint topics, if the coach did not ask any additional questions of the athletes, very little value in showing an empty text box related to questions that were never asked.
Note: The Athlete Weekly single form view will still always show all fields.
-
Athlete Weeklies - Inbox better layout on small screens
Summary:
For the folks using the inbox from your phone. Changed where the controls on the screen are displayed when using smaller screen - i.e. better stacking of fields. Also changed the way text is displayed, to more closely align to label fields, as well displaying text in a slight different font-size and font-color. Slightly modified handling of field labels, and other slight modifications.
I think the end result is a little bit cleaner and smoother experience on small screens.

Summary
On the weekly form, Weekly Stress and Weekly Soreness was giving some athletes difficulty. They reported when selecting the first item in the list, the selection would not “stick” and the form field would reset to “No Value”. This did not happen to all athletes, and seemed to be intermittent in nature. I recoded some of the internals of the form and corresponding data processing code, to avoid what I think was causing the issue. Let me know if your athletes have any issues with filling out the form.
-
AthleteProfile - QuickNote Changes
Summary
Moved the new note entry to the precede the list of historical notes. Theory is that if you want to add a new note quickly, why scroll to the bottom of the list ? The result is on the Athlete Profile page, the add new note control is at the top of the “Notes Panel.”
-
Analysis - Minor tweak to Heatmap Graphs on
Summary
Added a slight gap between cells on the heat map graphs.
